Whats this Campaign About?

Hands off Holidays is a campaign started in March 2002 by the North City Prevention Coalition.

This campaign focuses on the importance of keeping alcohol advertising from saturating the true meaning of holidays. The alcohol industry uses holiday advertisements as yet another way to introduce their product to our youth by using highly recognizable icons. It is important to raise awareness of the intent of the alcohol industry and the advertisements. The goals of this campaign include:-Change social norms -Increase awareness -Policy change

Where is this campaign going in the future?

Hands off Holidays is a year long campaign focusing on various holidays, including Halloween, Christmas, and Cinco de Mayo. We felt these holidays were most heavily targeted by alcohol advertising. For each of these holidays, we will create a new bus ad to circulate around the county. Look for a large campaign around Cinco de Mayo. We are sponsoring our 2nd annual Alcohol-free Cinco de Mayo celebration. This event focuses on raising awareness to the community of how alcohol advertising targets Latino cultures especially during Cinco de Mayo.

Hands off Holidays
The latest part of our campaign focuses on Cinco de Mayo. The most recent ad is currently on buses around San Diego. We also have an ad in the penny saver. Read more about our Cinco de Mayo Parade & Festival.

During a holiday like Christmas, which is a youth related holiday, alcohol advertisers are capitalizing on yet another occasion to market their product. Displays of Santa Clause, snow men and reindeers with their favorite six pack fill our stores. Is this the message we want our kids to recognize as just another part of the holiday season?
